The Fighting Cock, Chapter 24 "The Turn Of The Year (1945/1946)"

An up convoy, escorted by 5/9 Jats, who were newcomers to Java, had begun the long climb throught the hills when the leading vehicles were halted by a road-block. The hillside was alive with Indonesians, many of them, in the Japanese fashion occupying fox-holes, from which they lobbed an endless supply of Molotov cocktail on to the vehicles. It is no easy task to fight out of an ambush where an unseen foe commands the high ground and the infantry escort is spread over eight miles of road; moreover nightfall was not many hours away. The Jats C.O was seriously wounded in the first brush, one vehicle was ablaza, several other were badly damaged and a number of drives had slumped over their wheel, either dead or grievously hit.
